Your work is going to fill a large
part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you
believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you
do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all
matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.
As soon as I was old enough to have a job, I had one. I think I probably
worked in every seasonal and part-time job out there while at school and
university. But I never knew what I wanted to do when I ‘grew up’. Every
session with my careers teacher had me researching a different career, and I
was fascinated in everything I read. The one thing I did know though was that I
was interested in understanding and working with people which led me to study
Psychology at the University of Birmingham.
I was still no closer to knowing what I wanted to do in my early career,
where I worked in a variety of temp jobs and longer contracts. My a-ha moment came while working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in their
recruitment department, where I was first introduced to Careers Coaching and
using assessments to help clients understand their interests, values and motivation.
I decided that this was definitely going to be part of my long term plan and
used my time there to learn as much as I could.
A few years later after a move to the Weather Centre at the BBC I trained
with Careers Counselling Services as a Career Coach and started working with BBC
employees looking to move roles internally or as part of their outplacement
programme. It was at this time that I decided that this was the thing I couldn’t not
do! I loved my work and wanted to learn more, so I completed a Post Graduate Diploma
in Career and Talent Management at Kingston University.
Two children later I set up my own consultancy to fit around my family
life, working with private clients and organisations.
Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.
